A Bit of Story

Windows 7, regarded as the saviour OS of Microsoft. Like it's successor, Windows 8, it's development was started, even before Windows Vista RTMed. After the disastrous Vista, Microsoft's share lost to Apple, was recovered, to a good extent. Windows 7, was actually planned to be something else. It was planned even before Windows XP was given a codename! Well, to be precise, in 1999. But, it was different. Really different. Microsoft wanted to make it somewhat like this:

A few MS employees visited some place and stayed in the Whistler-Blackcomb resort in 1999. Hence, they codenamed the next version of Windows (XP) as Whistler. And the next to next as Blackcomb, which was intended to be Windows 7.

However, the ambitious plans of Bill Gates, required them to have an interim release between Whistler and Blackcomb, since Blackcomb was too major a change to use directly after Whistler. The interim was called Longhorn. A project that turned up to be something else. An interim that itself became a major release and changed everything.

After Longhorn was named Vista, Blackcomb was renamed to be Vienna.

On seeing the failure of Windows Vista, Microsoft's priorities changed. They wanted to simplify everything again. They wanted to remove all bugs. The Milestone 1 of Windows 7 removed most bugs, made the code stable and removed the buggy, resource hog called Sidebar. The project was renamed to Windows 7.
